Why It’s Important To Have

There are so many stressors on every member of the family today, financial, relational, and work/ school related stress to name a few.  The home is suppose to be an environment that will shield us from those stresses.  It is our safe place and shelter from the world around us.  It is also the place to build those lasting childhood memories.  How sad for time to just fly by because of our busy lives and have regrets about the time spent with our children.  We can’t spend our time living only for the weekend or the vacation time. We need to incorporate fun into our day to day.  When children are young get into the habit of making family meals something that you do together.  Take that opportunity around the table to talk but also don’t miss out on the opportunity for laughing and just plain silliness.  It is amazing the stress relief of a really good laugh.  Taking opportunities to look for fun also sets the tone for the atmosphere of your family.  What will your children feel as they think about their childhood? Will it be fond memories of great family times or will it be memories of wishing for something different.

Make sure to not take yourself to seriously and just have fun with your family.

Time Alone With Siblings

It is important for siblings to spend time together. The sibling relationship is one where a child can learn and practice a plethora of relational dynamics, from sharing, to putting others first. As siblings get older it is important for them to have time to work out issues. There are many things that given time they will learn how to work out among themselves, such as sharing. Clearly, when children are small parents need to keep a watchful eye and ear but sometimes observing from a distance will allow siblings to learn how to work out small disagreements on their own. Starting With Small Children

Raising small children in the digital age is a mixed bag. Although there are many more tools at a parents disposal for teaching, it is tempting to use devices as a digital nanny. We need to be careful to teach a child how to entertain themselves with out the use of electronics. They need to have the opportunity to think for themselves rather then have fun “thrown at them”. Yesterday we discussed how imaginative play leads to creativity and that leads to invention. I remember as a child having a refrigerator box to play with. Through the course of the day that box was a house, a school for stuffed animals and many other things before finally becoming a submarine. My brother and I cut out holes, and then figured out how to make a working periscope and finally painted our submarine. So our imaginative play led to invention. It was also such a fun memory I can recall it vividly decades later. Take the time to teach even your small children how to entertain themselves. It’s worth the training investment.
