Fitting Individual Goals Into The Marriage

Yesterday, we looked at the marriage as a vehicle to get to a common destination. Today we need to focus on the word team. Today’s culture deems the sense of self very important. We attempt to protect our sense of self, almost at all costs. The problem with this is we can easily become two married individuals who live together rather then all that God designed us to be. Genesis 2:24 says, “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” We are to become one unit or team. We don’t completely loose everything about who we are as individuals or why would God give us unique gifts and talents.
How often can we see different players on various sports teams who put their individual goal ahead of the teams. College players whose goals are to play professionally or even players who play very cautiously because their goal is to not get injured. They don’t allow their team to be the best they can be when they put their own goals first. This is the same for marriage. We need to process through with our spouse how our individual goals fit with our goals for our marriage.
Take the time to talk through this as a couple, maybe even listen to this week’s podcasts together.
