What Are the Things That Control Me?
We each have different temperaments, which means we bring different gifts and strengths to the parenting table. This also means that different things impact our emotions. It is important to know your triggers. We also have to be careful not to allow ourselves to fall into the “well that’s just the way I am” trap. I, for example, tend to be a “glass half empty” kinda person. I have to be careful not to fall into the negativity trap. Because of this I have to be careful not to allow things like social media to impact me emotionally. It is easy to let people I don’t even know well or situations in the world that I have no immediate control over have an impact on how I feel. If I let this have control of this I may be allowing an outside force be the thermostat for my home. We each have a different trigger. It could be things be material things (feeling the pressure to “keep up with the Joneses”), an entitlement mentality, work stressors, or even home relationships.
We have to be the driving force for the safe place of our home. There are a couple helpful verses to focus on. Philippians 4:6-8 say, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hears and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things.”
